Not
all nursery rhymes subscribe to the “happily ever
after” we often associate with children’s
literature. That’s especially true with Humpty Dumpty,
but you would never know it from this illustration. Artist
Charlotte Stone created this wonderfully expressive glimpse
at the unlucky egg in 1928. She infused it with such vibrant
color and optimism that it’s possible to believe
there will be a happy ending for this guy after all.
