| Perched among the branches, as much a part
of the tree as the flowers themselves, the fairies in
this 1942 illustration by Erika entertain themselves and,
one assumes, passers by with their playful songs and petal-like
attire. Simple, carefree, colorful illustrations were
common in the years around World War II, perhaps reflecting
a desire to escape the complex hardships most people faced.
The Fairy Tree still has the ability to inspire us to
laugh and play. |
